Horseback Riding (Boys/Girls)(offered at an additional cost)The Susquehannock Camps offer an extensive riding program to riders of all levels and ages. Quality instruction, facilities, and programs develop horsemanship knowledge, skills, and a passion for riding & horses. This is one of our most popular programs.
The Program
The Camp Susquehannock riding program focuses on hunt seat equitation (English) addressing aspects of both hunter and jumper methods. The current skills of each rider are assessed at the beginning of each session so that lessons can be tailored to meet the needs of each individual. Riders also learn about and apply skills of grooming, tacking, and general horse care to develop good horsemanship. Riders may choose to ride either 3 or 6 times per week. The Horses The Susquehannock Camps Riding Program provides a range of horses to meet the diverse abilities of campers from beginners just learning to ride, to competitive riders whose experiences include training and showing beyond the camp season. The majority of horses are leased from nearby facilities and return year after year, though each year we bring in new equine additions to complement our program. The Facilities Extensive and recently built riding facilities include two barns complete with tack and feed rooms, a 100' x 230' outdoor ring as well as a smaller beginner ring, a full set of jumps for course work, and miles of trails through the woods and fields. The Shows Each session, The Susquehannock Camps host their own horse show in which all riders participate. These shows include a small group portion in which riders demonstrate their skills on the flat at the walk, trot, and canter as appropriate to their riding level. All riders also compete in a second "Over Fences" class where riders individually demonstrate what they've learned in riding a course (height determined by rider ability) or show their skills by riding a course of ground poles. The horse shows are a great opportunity for campers to share what they have learned in a competitive yet fun atmosphere. Families and friends are encouraged to attend!Apparel & Equipment ASTM approved helmets and boots or shoes with heels are required, as are breeches, or jeans/long pants and chaps. Camp Susquehannock provides appropriate riding equipment for any rider who does not own his/her own gear.
