LIT/CIT Program : Susquehannock Camps

Leaders-In-Training and Counselors-In-Training Program (LITs and CITs)

The Susquehannock Camps have worked since their foundation to build opportunities to teach campers about themselves and therefore to develop their independence, leadership potential, and the character strengths which exist in each of them. The LIT/CIT program is set up to help campers learn some leadership qualities that will not only help them to become great camp counselors, but help them in life in general.

Leaders-in-Training Program (LITs)
To qualify for this option, LITs must be entering their sophomore year in high school, and/or be 15 years of age by the start of camp. LITs should have:

  • Some prior camp experience
  • Particular interest in one of the Camp program activities
  • A positive outlook and enthusiasm for Camp program
  • A demonstrated patience and desire to work with children
  • Shown some leadership ability
  • Ability to be a role model for younger campers

LITs pay full fees and while considered a full camper, they may ask to be assigned certain duties from the LIT staff supervisor and they will be paid accordingly at the end of their camp session. Duties may include sweeping, mopping in the dining hall, light outside work, bringing ice to the Infirmary and one time job assignments from Senior Staff. They may help with cabin coverage during staff meetings if needed. LITs must keep track of their "hours" by having each entry signed for in their log book. They will also be evaluated and given feedback.

LITs will receive a chaperoned trip out of Camp and use of the soda machines (not in front of younger campers).

Counselors-in-Training Program (CITs)
CIT eligible campers should fill out the camper application. Prior to their arrival at Camp, they will be asked to sign a CIT agreement. They must also attend the special training for CITs before the start of Camp.
To qualify, CIT's must be entering their junior year of high school, and/or be 16 years of age by the start of camp. Typically CITs have been LITs before and have:

  • Prior camp experience at Susquehannock
  • Ability/potential in one of the Camp program activities
  • A positive outlook and enthusiasm for Camp program
  • A demonstrated patience and desire to work with children
  • Shown leadership ability
  • Ability to be a role model for younger campers

CIT's pay 75% tuition and while they participate in activities they also agree in exchange for this reduction that they will perform daily service and work credits. CIT's can work extra work hours for pay but only when assigned by the CIT supervisor. Duties will include: Cabin coverage, Lake duties with swimming and boating, dining hall cleaning duties, light outside duties such as painting field lines, mowing, brush removal, administrative office and staff assistance (phones, infirmary, camp store). CIT's must keep track of their "hours" by having each assignment signed for in their log books. They will be carefully supervised and encouraged, evaluated, given constructive feedback and "coaching". CIT's must complete their service requirements in order to fulfill their tuition. Failure to do so may result in a bill being presented at the end of their season. Additional hours gained will be paid for when the CIT's complete their stay.

CIT's will have one chaperoned trip out of camp each week, use of the soda machines, and lights out at 11 p.m. Cell phone usage is permitted only on nights out.
