Susquehannock is extremely proud of the extraordinary staff we bring together each summer to work with your children. Talented athletes, experienced coaches, and gifted teachers,. many of our senior staff and cabin counselors grew up at camp and went through our own Counselor-in-Training program. Adding international flavor to your camper's experience, each year we recruit a number of counselors from university teaching and coaching programs all over the world. Regardless of where they come from or how many years they have been at Susquehannock, all staff are dedicated to the care and development of youth.

Camp Susquehannock Inc. is a 501c Non-Profit institution, and the organization's sole purpose is to provide extraordinary summer experiences for a diverse family of campers that come from all over the world. Operations are led by Administrator Tarryn Larson Rozen, who is supported by a board of trustees - all former campers or parents of campers. The day-to-day staff of the camp each summer is led by experienced site directors for each camp program, with senior staff and cabin counselors primarily responsible for camper instruction and supervision.

Cannie Shafer, Camp Director

years on staff - 28

Joined Camp Staff in 1982. Former head of the Craft Shop at S4B, Assistant Director of S4G, and Co-Site Director of S4B since 2001. Cannie has most recently been Assistant Head at The Episcopal Academy (Newtown Square, PA), having spent seventeen years as Head of Lower School (Devon Campus). She will begin at Germantown Academy as Head of Lower School starting this fall.

Cannie has an A.B. from Sweet Briar College (VA) and an M.A. from Villanova University. As an athlete at Sweet Briar, Cannie earned 12 varsity letters - in Lacrosse, Field Hockey, and Basketball, and is a charter member of the college's Athletic Hall of Fame. Cannie lives in Haverford, PA

Joined Camp Staff in 1979, after 4 years as a camper. A Classics teacher at the Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, PA, "TK" is Head Coach of the Varsity Boy's Tennis Team, named the best team in Pennsylvania by the Philadelphia Inquirer in 2006.

TK has a B.A. in Classics from Hamilton College, where he played on the varsity tennis and squash teams. He and his wife Maude live in Ardmore, PA

Joined Camp Staff in 2007. Trish joined us having heard about camp all her married life - as her husband Tim Percevecz was an 11-year Susquehannock veteran in the 70's and 80's. Trish was a camp counselor during college out in Colorado, where she taught canoeing and mountain climbing.

Trish lives with her family in McKinney, Texas, where she teaches World Geography at McKinney-Boyd High School. Trish is a graduate of Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma

Joined Camp Staff in 1988, after 6 years as a camper. "Savy" is a teacher at the internationally acclaimed Watershed Program at Radnor Middle School, Radnor, PA. He is also the Head Coach of Girl's Basketball, Girl's Lacrosse, and Boy's Soccer.

Jon is a graduate of SUNY Binghamton. He is also a graduate of the NOLS Outdoor Education Program. Jon lives in Rosemont, PA.

Robert Kent, Assistant Director - S4B, Camp Webmaster

Joined Camp Staff in 1980, after 6 years as a camper. "RK" is the Program Director at S4B. He has been Head Tennis Coach and Assistant Hockey Coach at the Marvelwood School (Cornwall, CT). A fourth degree black belt in Aikido, RK currently runs the Youth Program at Aikido West in Redwood City, CA and designs aerospace manufacturing systems. He is the founder of both AikidoKids.com and The PeaceCamp Initiative (for which he won the 2008 Ben & Jerry's "Peace Pioneer" prize), and is on the board of Aiki-Extensions. Rob teaches Aikido and Ethics each January for the Philosophy Department at his alma mater, Williams College.

RK has an MA in Philosophy from Claremont Graduate School. He lives in Menlo Park, CA.

Mima Wellington, Assistant to the Director - S4G

Joined Camp Staff in 2005, after 9 years as a camper. Mima teaches Softball, Basketball, Volleyball, Archery, and Dance.

Mima graduated from the High School for Environmental Studies, where she was captain of the Varsity Softball team and head of the Improv group. She is a senior at the University of Vermont, where she majors in Environmental Studies and minors in Japanese and Anthropology. She also manages the Women's Basketball team. Mima lives in New York City.

Jay Pearcy, Head of Waterfront

Joined Camp Staff in 1993, after 9 years as a camper. After 14 years away, Jay returned last year with his wife Jennifer and daughters Kaitlyn and Elizabeth. Jay is a history teacher at Valley Forge Military Academy, where he is also the Varsity Lacrosse coach.

Jay earned his B.A. in Education at the Citadel, and his M.A. Ed. at Villanova University.

Tim re-joined Camp Staff in 2008, after having spent 11 years as a camper and one year as a counselor back in the 70's and 80's. Tim joins his wife Trica and camper daughter Cassidy who started last year, and runs the Arts & Crafts program for both camps. Tim is a graduate of The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD, and works in the computer industry.

George "Buff" Weigand

Joined Camp Staff in 1947. "Buff" has served Susquehannock as a counselor and as Head of both the Hill Camp and Junior Camp. Buff currently serves on the camp's Board of Trustees and as a "grandfather in residence" during the camp season. An experienced teacher, Buff is currently retired following a long and distinguished career at the William Penn Charter School, Philadelphia, PA. Prior to Penn Charter, Buff taught at several schools, including Saint Andrews, MD, and Detroit Country Day School. He has coached soccer, baseball, and basketball, and is an accomplished official.

Buff sold his home outside Philadelphia and now lives about half the year in one of the lakeside cottages. He enjoys winters in Florida. He is a graduate of Gettysburg College.

Andrew Hano, Program Support

Joined Camp Staff in 1990, after 8 years as a camper. Andrew holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Education from Wake Forest University. This year he will teach 8th grade US History at Summit School in Winston-Salem, NC. He has taught 5th, 6th, and 7th grades at Summit. Andrew also spent 6 years as a stay-at-home parent with his two children. Andrew's daugter Abigail is a camper this summer, and his wife Erika will be visiting when her work schedule allows.

Andrew is returning to Susquehannock staff for the first time since 1995. He brings 13 years experience as a camper, CIT, counselor, and Waterfront Director.

Joined Camp Staff in 1986. Maude oversees the Tennis Program for our younger Campers, and helps coordinate round robin competition events with other camps and local tennis programs.

Maude has a B.A. from Harvard University. She earned varsity letters in Tennis, Basketball, and Field Hockey. Maude is Dean of Faculty at The Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, PA, where she also teaches history and math. She lives in Ardmore, PA with her husband Tim.

Joined Camp Staff in 2003, after 9 years as a camper. Seth runs the S4B Waterfront program and teaches Baseball and Soccer. He also leads the Hill Camp Fitness Training Program.

Seth graduated from Camp Hill High School, Camp Hill, PA, where he was captain of the soccer team and ran track. He is a recent graduate of Dickinson College, where he played ultimate frisbee.

Paul Moeller, CIT Program Head - S4B

Joined Camp Staff in 2003, after 3 years as a camper. Paul primarily helps teach Baseball, Street Hockey, and Ultimate Frisbee, but also assists with a variety of other sports and supervises boys in the woodshop.

Paul graduated from Xavier University in Ohio, where he played on the Ultimate Frisbee team, in 2008 with a degree in Middle Childhood Education. He will be teaching 7th and 8th grade social studies at Avondale School in Cinncinati, OH.

Joined Camp Staff in 2007, after 12 years as a camper. Mia is the daughter of long-time senior staff Tim and Maude Kent, and the granddaughter of former counselor and board member Tom Kent. At Susquehannock, Mia primarily teaches tennis.

Mia is a graduate of The Episcopal Academy outside Philadelphia, where she played Varsity Tennis and performed in the theatre. For her junior year, she attended the American School in Madrid. Mia will be a freshman at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, having taken a gap year working and traveling in Senegal, Peru, and Thailand. Mia lives in Ardmore, PA

Blake Shafer

Joined Camp Staff in 2007, after 13 years as a camper. Blake is the great-grandson of Camp Susquehannock founder George Carlton "King" Shafer.

Blake graduated from The Episcopal Academy outside Philadelphia, where he played Varsity Soccer, Basketball, and Lacrosse. He also tought Sunday School at his church, and tutored inner-city children. He has been accepted to Bates College in Maine, but has taken a year off to, among other things, hike the entire Appalachian Trail (see our news page for details). Blake lives in Haverford, PA, and will join us in August when he's finished with the AT.

Carroll Bedford, Horseback Riding Program

Joined Camp Staff in 2004 to help direct the girl's camp horseback riding program. Carroll rode professionally for almost 20 years, and has been teaching Hunting and English Riding for more than 50 years. She works with the majority of camp's horses year round. During the rest of the year, Carroll teaches at Foxnest Farm in Montrose, PA.

Joined Camp Staff in 2009. Gabrielle has been riding since she was five years old. She grew up in the 4-H program, and currently shows horses regularly. Gabrielle currently has four horses - Missy, Dolly, Domino, and Hope. She currently studies horse training and hippotherapy.

Tarryn joined Camp Staff in 1998. She is from South Africa, and while at camp her first year, Tarryn met Eric Rozen (a veteran counselor at Camp Susquehannock for Boys) and the two were married in 2000.

Tarryn is a graduate of Pietermarizburg University in South Africa. She is in the process of completing her Masters in Educational Psychology. Tarryn lives with her family in Rochester, NY.

Josh Oryhon, Recruiter

Josh Oryhon, or "JoshO", joined camp staff in 2001 as a counselor. Since 2006, Josh has headed up the recruiting and marketing efforts for Camp Susquehannock, Inc. During the camp season, he also helps out wherever he can in both camps in addition to maintaining the Tripp Lake Times.

Josh joined Camp Staff in 2001. "JoshO" helps with Hockey and Wrestling clinics, special event hosting, and general morale support.

Josh graduated from the State University of New York at Albany, where he majored in Russian and Eastern European Studies. He is past president of the Albany chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and retired as the only undefeated goaltender in the Great Danes hockey team's history. Josh lives in Philadelphia, PA
