Camp was founded in 1905 by a teacher, George Carleton "King" Shafer, who was assigned to tutor a number of Lawrenceville students over the summer. Believing that the pristine highlands of Pennsylvania's Endless Mountains would be more comfortable for everyone than suffering in the pre-airconditioning summer swelter of Central New Jersey, he brought all these students with him up to what is now Susquehannock. When not studying, they played baseball and swam in the cool waters of Tripp Lake.
Susquehannock continues to believe, almost 100 years later, that fresh air, sunshine, and sports combine well with academic rigor for those campers who seek either to get ahead in school or who need remedial assistance. Some in the tutoring program are international campers engaged in English reading, speaking, and composition, Susquehannock also offers instruction in math, science, and Latin. With many teachers on staff, campers who need instruction in almost any subject can be accommodated.
Tutoring fees are $25 per 45 minute session. Sessions can be scheduled three or six times per week for any subject. Campers may tutor in two subjects.
