Camp Nurse
Position Purpose
The camp Nurse will evaluate and treat campers and staff for minor injuries and illnesses, supervise and ensure implementation of medication policies and procedures at camp, keep a log of Health Center visits, give supportive advice to counselors and other camp staff if requested, and identify health problems serious enough to require a physician's attention. A more detailed job description will be provided for interested candidates after a phone interview.
Essential Job Functions
Caring for the medical needs of campers and staff at camp
- Oversee the health and wellness of approximately 125 campers and 50 staff
- Conduct initial health screening of all campers and staff
- Provide medical attention to campers and staff with general health concerns and document in Health Log
- Distribute and record camper medications
- Maintain Health Center record and medical forms
- Supervise Health Care assistants
- Communicate specific camper health needs (allergies, special diets, etc.) to staff
- Communicate with the Camp Director and Heads of Camp about camper health issues
- Schedule appointments for sick/injured campers or staff to the hospital or clinic
- Be a "primary care giver" to our campers
Other Job Duties
- Act as a liaison with local doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies
- Be present at the registration of each camp session to check in and file the incoming health forms, record the individual problems, and note medications and conduct initial screening
- Stocking First Aid supplies in the Health Center and all areas of camp and controlling their outflow
- Safeguarding the camper's prescription medications; administering the medications at the prescribed dosages and hours
- Participate in camp activities and events
- Communicate and cooperate with all staff. Express any concerns in a professional manner at an appropriate time. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff
Equipment Used
The LVN/RN will be expected to use the computer to access the electronic health record system to log and track treatment and medications.
Responsible To
The LVN/RN reports to the Health Center Director, Medical Director and Camp Director.
Minimum Qualifications
- LVN, LPN or RN (Licensed in the State of Pennsylvania)
- Flexible – able to adapt to different environments and schedules
- Confidence in nursing skills
- Responsible, hard working
- Good bedside manner, friendly and personable
- Strong assessment abilities
- Prior experience with children (does not have to be in a medical capacity)
- Desire and ability to be a team player
- Enjoy an active lifestyle
- Must submit health history record and examination form prior to the first day of work
- Must be able to pass the state criminal background investigation with a favorable result prior to the first day of work
- Have a genuine interest in working with and concern for children with special needs
- Ability to interact with boys and girls ages 6-17 with varying abilities levels
Physical Aspects of the Job
- Ability to verbally communicate and work with youth with social skill and some academic difficulties (all age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff
- Ability to visually and auditorily observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce relevant safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques

- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring First Aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
- Endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.
Work Schedule
Health Center is staffed 24/7. We create a schedule of shifts that fits the needs of the camp.
